About Us

Our History

Since its inception in 1992, the Community Black Achievers Wings Award has stood as a proud celebration of excellence, ambition, and positive transformation within our communities. Held bi-annually over the past decade, the Awards serve as both a recognition of achievement and a powerful response to longstanding negative perceptions surrounding areas such as Chapeltown, Harehills, and Little London.

During the early 1990s, media coverage of these communities often centred around themes of crime, drug misuse, and high unemployment. These portrayals overlooked the resilience, talent, and determination of the people living there—particularly our young people. In response, the Black Achievers Wings Award was established to shine a light on positive stories, and to dispel damaging myths of underachievement.

Our aim is simple yet profound: to celebrate and uplift. We honour the successes of young individuals within our communities who are making meaningful strides towards their personal and professional goals. These Awards not only recognise present accomplishments, but also serve as an inspiration and incentive for future generations.

The Black Achievers Wings Award is more than a ceremony; it is a movement—one that champions diversity, acknowledges perseverance, and amplifies the voices of young Black achievers who are shaping a brighter future.

Together, we affirm a message of hope, progress, and excellence—rooted in community pride and shared aspiration.
