In 2016, the Black Achievers Wings Award launched an inspiring initiative known as the Listen Project — a platform designed to give young people the opportunity to engage directly with decision-makers and shape conversations about their communities’ future.
Through this project, a group of passionate young individuals took part in meaningful interviews with local councillors, sharing their views, experiences, and ideas for positive change. The sessions encouraged open dialogue between youth and local government, allowing the young participants to explore how policies are developed and how their voices can make a real impact.
One of the highlights of the Listen Project was a special visit to the House of Commons in London. This visit gave participants firsthand insight into how parliamentary democracy works — from debates and discussions to the process of passing laws. The experience was both educational and empowering, inspiring many to think about leadership, civic engagement, and their role in shaping society.
One of the young participants was particularly inspired by her experience in the House of Commons. Motivated by what she learned and observed, she expressed a strong interest in joining a youth forum within the House of Commons, eager to continue engaging with civic issues and contribute her perspective to national discussions.
The Listen Project embodies the mission of the Black Achievers Wings Award: to nurture ambition, leadership, and active citizenship among young people. By providing platforms like this, we continue to encourage the next generation to speak up, get involved, and make their voices heard where it matters most.
